Sport at Saint Ronan’s is all about fun and enjoyment. We strive to get the balance right with our all-inclusive programme, focusing on both excellence and participation and providing opportunities for all the pupils.
Our comprehensive games programme and match afternoons are complemented by a varied PE curriculum which allows all pupils to experience and enjoy a variety of activities. Inter-house and inter-school matches allow the children to demonstrate their skills in a more competitive environment and each year we have a number of pupils (boys and girls) that go on to represent their District or County at their chosen sport.
Pupils in the Prep School have three games sessions each week and the sports taught at this time are football, netball, hockey, lacrosse, rugby, cross-country, cricket, rounders and athletics. Each pupil also receives two (Years 3-4) and one (Years 5-8) PE lessons which focus on health-related fitness, gymnastics, basketball, badminton and swimming. Other activities such as fencing, mountain-biking and tennis can be accessed via the extra-curricular programme.
In the Pre-Prep, all pupils from Reception to Year 2 receive specialist PE teaching to develop the core components of sport – such as agility, coordination and balance. This leads to an introduction of the major games played in the Prep School.
We are fortunate to have beautiful grounds that provide a wonderful setting for training and playing matches in all the major games. A Sports Hall, Astro pitch, netball courts and outdoor swimming pool complete the impressive facilities on offer.
The school Common Room provides experienced PE teachers and sports coaches who understand the ethos of prep school sport and allow the school to run many teams throughout the age groups.
There are many opportunities for the children to pursue their sport further, if they wish, at local clubs. Those who show potential can be considered for District or County trials. Pupils who wish to pursue sports scholarships are given advice and coaching, where necessary, to enhance their application.
Saint Ronan’s grass pitches are set in magnificent grounds and adapted throughout the year to reflect the sports on offer. To complement these, there is an Astro, Sports Hall, netball courts and a swimming pool. In addition, there are mountain bike trails through the woods and a fishing lake.

Fixtures are an exciting part of the week and take place on Wednesday (U13-U10) and Thursday (U9-U8) afternoons. The matches reflect the major games that are being taught at the time. In addition to these, the school also enters a number of festivals and tournaments at all levels, while Cross-Country running events are attended and held throughout the Autumn and Spring terms. Swimming and athletics take place during the summer and there are fencing matches throughout the year.
