Head of Department: Emma Morrell -
As an ex-Head of French with a career spent teaching Classics and Modern Languages in grammar schools, it is inevitable that I have sought to merge MFL methodology with the delivery of Latin within the curriculum. In a modern world, where young people question why they are studying an ancient language, it is essential to move with the times. They need to be aware that they are developing valuable skills of analysis, decoding, vocabulary learning; not to mention learning about a fascinating civilisation which has had such a huge influence on our own modern society. As children become more familiar with the language, they will learn to apply their linguistic knowledge to improve their understanding of English and French and will feel inspired to apply their knowledge to master other modern languages. In this way, maintaining a link between the ancient and modern worlds will become second nature and I hope that many of these children will foster a love of languages, which will remain with them forever.
